Veolia Towers Hamburg
Veolia Towers Hamburg has been a consistent representative in the BKT EuroCup since the 2021-22 campaign. In its first two years on the international stage, the club from northern Germany reached the EuroCup Playoffs. Founded in 2013 by CEO Marvin Willoughby and CFO Jan Fischer, as well as the former EuroCup star Pascal Roller and others, the club initially started in the German second division. Over the next four years, the development in professionalizing the structures was driven forward. In 2018-19, everything clicked. Under head coach Mike Taylor, a domestic playoff run was achieved after a strong regular season (19-11). Promotion was achieved after winning the second division championship, with the decisive three-pointer scored by homegrown talent Justus Hollatz, who has developed from Hamburg into a Turkish Airlines EuroLeague player and 2023 world champion. The club’s premiere in the German League was sluggish. When the season was canceled in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Veolia Towers were at the bottom of the table. With a change at the head coach position, Pedro Calles then brought a new momentum. A team based around Maik Kotsar and TJ Shorts saw Hamburg clinch seventh place (21-13) at the end of the regular season in 2020-21, but it was swept by eventual champions ALBA Berlin in the quarterfinals of the playoffs. In Hamburg’s second season under the Spanish head coach, the team again qualified for the playoffs in the German League and also made it to the postseason in its premiere EuroCup campaign. Raoul Korner took over as head coach for the 2022-23 season. However, the Austrian was unable to drive the team forward and left in January 2023. Since then, Benka Barloschky has been the club’s head coach. After a difficult season in which relegation from the German top flight was averted, the club is moving forward once again. With a focus on player development, Veolia Towers Hamburg finished 10th place in the German League (17-17) and qualified for the play-in. After a great win against Oldenburg, the team’s season ended in Ludwigsburg right before the playoffs began. For the 2024-25 season, Hamburg will once again look to challenge for a spot in the playoffs of the German League and the EuroCup.
