ALBA Berlin heads into its third consecutive season in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague eager to continue working its way up the standings. Slowly but surely, history is playing its role in hyping up games in each new season. Based on previous results and the histories of its players and coaches, some games bring more buzz than others for the team and its fans alike. Here are five such games for the 2021-22 season.

## Round 1: Coach Aito faces his ex


ALBA has lost five in a row against FC Barcelona, with its last victory over the Catalan power coming in January 2015. Last season, Barca won both games by double figures, including a 67-103 smackdown in the German capital. However, what these teams share is great growth under Coach Aito Garcia Reneses. Aito helped build Barcelona into a power in the 1980s and ‘90s and over the last four years has been doing the same with ALBA.

## Round 5: Will the run against Zvezda continue?
Since ALBA returned to the EuroLeague in the summer of 2019, it has faced Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade four times. And it has won each of those games. That is the best record ALBA has against any EuroLeague team. Three of those games have been won by double figures, including an 81-58 rout in the final game of last season. Can ALBA make it five in a row?

## Round 7: The best in Germany

FC Bayern Munich got the best of ALBA last season in the EuroLeague when it swept their two regular-season meetings and made history as the first German club to make the EuroLeague Playoffs. ALBA, however, had the last laugh when it won the best-of-five German League finals in four games. These teams know each other well and are always geared up for this clash.

## Round 20: Back in Tel Aviv

When ALBA visits Tel Aviv this season, it well have two players to serve as its tour guides. Yovel Zoosman spent the past four seasons in a Maccabi uniform, while Tamir Blatt's father, David, guided Maccabi to its most-recent EuroLeague crown in 2014 as its head coach. Many curious eyes will be eager to see how these two bright young Israeli stars perform with ALBA in a place they know so well. 

## Round 28: Hosting the captain


After seven seasons with his boyhood club – including several as the team captain, Niels Giffey signed with Zalgiris Kaunas over the summer and this will be the first time ALBA welcomes him back home to the German capital. It should be a warm welcome to set the stage for an exciting game as ALBA looks to end a three-game slide against the Lithuanian champs.

Zvezda, Wolters join forces again

Wolters (1.93 meters, 30 years old) made his Turkish Airlines EuroLeague debut with Zvezda during the 2016-17 season, and also helped Zvezda to a domestic triple crown, winning the Adriatic League as well as the Serbian League and Cup double that season. Has also played for Zalgiris Kaunas and Maccabi Tel Aviv in the EuroLeague, and has 70 career appearances in the competition, averaging 8.8 points, 2.9 assists and 2.3 rebounds. Wolters arrives from Russian side UNICS Kazan, which he helped win the 7DAYS EuroCup last season. He averaged 7.1 points on 43.3% three-point shooting and 2.4 assists in 16 EuroCup contests with UNICS. He also posted 9.4 points, 3.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds in VTB League action, helping the team reach league playoff finals.

Wolters has also played for Besiktas Istanbul in Turkey, Milwaukee, New Orleans and Utah in the NBA, Grand Rapids and Salt Lake City in the D-League and Chalon in France. He won the Adriatic League and the Serbian League and Cup double in his time with Zvezda as well as the Lithuanian championship with Zalgiris.

AS Monaco is set to make its Turkish Airlines EuroLeague debut in the 2021-22 season and of course, it will meet some of the competition's giants for the first time. Some dates are marked in red in its calendar - facing the reigning EuroLeague champion and the two winningest teams in the competition, meeting a recent opponent and being part of a rare All-French League showdown.

## ROUND 2: Good memories

It will be special for Monaco to return to Russia and face UNICS Kazan at Basket Hall. Monaco recorded arguably its biggest win ever in that building, downing UNICS 83-86 to lift its first continental trophy: the 2020-21 7DAYS EuroCup. Monaco had previously defeated UNICS 89-87 in Game 1 in the Principality. These teams are facing each other for the first time since the EuroCup Finals. UNICS should be highly motivated, as its four games against Monaco in the last two seasons prevented it from winning a prestigious European trophy.

## ROUND 3: Real Madrid, 33 years later
Monaco is set to face 10-time EuroLeague champion Real Madrid for the first time since 1988. These teams previously only faced each other in the 1987-88 Korac Cup. Real downed Monaco 117-81 in the Spanish capital behind 27 points from Brad Branson. Things were different at Stade Louis II, where Monaco led 55-43 at halftime. Real rallied to record an 84-87 victory behind 29 points from Wendell Alexis. Philippe Szanyiel led Monaco with 22 points. Real went on to win the Korac Cup in 1988 - and is set to face Monaco 33 years later!

One of the main attractions for any new EuroLeague squad is to face those teams that you cannot possibly go against unless you are in Europe's marquee competition. That should be the case when CSKA Moscow visits Monaco. It is not the only big club that never played against the Principality squad, but has more EuroLeague titles than Panathinaikos OPAP Athens, Olympiacos Piraeus, FC Barcelona, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, AX Armani Exchange Milan or Zalgiris Kaunas, just to name some of the teams that have never faced Monaco in the past.

## ROUND 11: A clash of winners

For any team, it is always special to face the reigning Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champions and of course, things have changed since Anadolu Efes Istanbul and Monaco faced each other. It was 1987 and both teams were trying to qualify to the Korac Cup group stage. The then-called Efes Pilsen topped Monaco 69-67 in the first leg of a two-game total-points series. Monaco prevailed at home, 59-54, and won the series by an aggregate score of 126-123. This is a very different showdown between the reigning EuroLeague and EuroCup champions!

## ROUND 12: Familiar faces

For the first time in the 21st century, two French League teams are set to face each other in the EuroLeague regular season. You have to go back to the 1999-00 EuroLeague campaign to find a matchup between two French teams, ASVEL and Pau-Orthez. There are a lot of links between both teams, but the strongest one comes through Monaco head coach Zvezdan Mitrovic, who led ASVEL from 2018 to 2020. Mitrovic helped ASVEL win the French League and French Cup in the 2019-20 season. Monaco and ASVEL face each other in Europe for the first time since 1975!

FC Bayern Munich added plenty of experience with the signing of versatile forward DeShaun Thomas, which the club announced Tuesday. Thomas (2.01 meters, 29 years old) last played with Toyota Alvark Tokyo where he posted 16.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists in the Japanese League last season. Thomas is a veteran of six Turkish Airlines EuroLeague seasons. He has 161 appearances in the competition, during which he has amassed 1,596 points (9.9 ppg.) and 493 rebounds (3.1 rpg.).

"The last season in Japan was an adventure, but after that, I quickly had the EuroLeague again in my head, it was a must for me," Thomas said. "Bayern is now a very good opportunity for me. They were one shot away from the Final Four last season and I like that I will again have close battles in the EuroLeague with a strong organization. I know I have a lot of experience, but above all, I am a team guy who is a hard worker and who wants to win. I can score, but I fight just as hard around the rebound and in defense. I know that Coach Trinchieri lets a lot of switches - and I do think that goes very well with my passion and my will."


Thomas last played in the EuroLeague in the 2019-20 season with Panathinaikos OPAP Athens. It was his second of two seasons there, and he averaged a career-high 13.9 points over 28 appearances. In his two seasons with Panathinaikos, Thomas helped the Greens win back-to-back Greek League plus the Greek Cup in 2019. Thomas spent a season apiece with JSF Nanterre of France, FC Barcelona of Spain, Anadolu Efes Istanbul of Turkey and Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv of Israel. In that time, Thomas won the Israeli championship with Maccabi and the French Cup with Nanterre. He also played one season in the D-League for Austin.

Bayern adds versatile forward Thomas

Six-time continental champion Panathinaikos OPAP Athens is one of the first teams that opponents look for when the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague calendar comes out. Looking deep into the schedule, Panathinaikos can see itself battling against classic Spanish powerhouses, several teams that don't fancy the green color and facing a squad that has stood in its way to success.

## ROUND 4: Fierce opponents
Real Madrid has arguably been Panathinaikos's main rival in recent years in terms of preventing the Greek powerhouse from reaching glory. Real stopped Panathinaikos in the 2018 playoffs – without the home-court advantage – and in the 2019 EuroLeague Playoffs, denying the Greens the chance to reach the Final Four. Los Blancos have won their last 12 games against Panathinaikos and got a 92-97 double-overtime victory against the Greek powerhouse last season. Always proud and ready, Panathinaikos will look to bounce back.

## ROUND 8: A very familiar face
Panathinaikos should be extremely motivated to face Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade due to the lattter's well-known brotherhood with Olympiacos. One of its main pillars, however, played for Zvezda in the past and still celebrates his former squad's success. Shooting guard Nemanja Nedovic played for Zvezda from 2008 to 2012 and has never won in Belgrade in EuroLeague action, losing against his former team with Panathinaikos and Unicaja Malaga in the Serbian capital. Nedovic should be ready to bounce back in an important game for him.

## ROUND 17: The Greek Derby

Every Panathinaikos fan who considers himself or herself a diehard one first gazes at the EuroLeague calendar to see two things: When does Panathinaikos host archrival Olympiacos Piraeus? And when do the Greens visit the Reds? It is one of the biggest derbies in basketball and since both teams are playing less often in the last two years, the EuroLeague games between them are more important than ever. Win this game and your fans will be happy for weeks. Lose it... and face the consequences. It should be the first Greek derby with fans in OAKA since December 2019 - expect it to be outstanding!

## ROUND 21: Memories of great battles



Panathinaikos and Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv have faced each other 43 times and some of those showdowns have been critical to winning titles. Panathinaikos beat Maccabi in the 2000 and 2011 EuroLeague championship games to win its second and sixth continental crowns. It also defeated Maccabi in the 2002 semifinals on its way to its third EuroLeague title. Maccabi bested Panathinaikos in the 2001 SuproLeague final and the 2005 EuroLeague semifinals and claimed both trophies. And their playoff series in 2012 was an instant classic.

## ROUND 25: A truly classic game
Panathinaikos won its first EuroLeague title in 1996 by downing FC Barcelona in Paris, France. The teams' rivalry remains strong more than 25 years after that game. Panathinaikos eliminated Barcelona in the 2011 playoffs on its way to its sixth title, but Barcelona returned the favor in 2013 in a thrilling five-game series. Barcelona has won its last five EuroLeague games against the Greens, including a 97-89 overtime thriller at home last season, and accumulated 10 consecutive victories at Palau Blaugrana.



Six-time continental champion Panathinaikos OPAP Athens is one of the first teams that opponents look for when the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague calendar comes out.

For every Turkish Airlines EuroLeague team, a trip to Kaunas to visit Zalgiris is a special one. Playing Zalgiris on the road is one of the toughest, but at the same time one of the most enjoyable experiences in basketball. Zalgiris enters the season with hopes of contending for a place in the EuroLeague Playoffs once again, but the road there is filled with intriguing games. Here are some of the games to circle on the Zalgiris calendar.

## ROUND 2: In search of maiden win
Zenit is the only team that Zalgiris has never defeated in the EuroLeague. In four games between them entering this season, Zenit has as many wins. Two of those decisions were in overtime back in the 2019-20 season and Zenit swept Zalgiris last season again. Moreover, Zalgiris has never scored more than 75 points in a game against Zenit, which snuck into the EuroLeague Playoffs as the No. eight seed last season in a similar way Zalgiris did in 2019. Those are among the many reasons why this intriguing matchup is one to watch.

## ROUND 8: Facing his hometown club

In head-to-head meetings between Zalgiris and ALBA, a home team has won each game until last season when Zalgiris pulled out a 71-74 win in the German capital. Zalgiris has not lost on home floor against ALBA this century, and there has not been much out of the ordinary in their games until this summer when long-time ALBA team captain Niels Giffey left the team where he grew up and joined Zalgiris. He scored 10 points in ALBA uniform when visiting Kaunas last season, but this time he will be in Zalgiris jersey and facing his hometown club for the very first time in his career.

## ROUND 19: Welcoming a friend
Last season Zalgiris had three last-second victories. Likely the most improbable one was at home against Olympiacos in a game that Zalgiris finished scoring the last 9 points - a run capped with a steal and a game-winning fastbreak layup by Thomas Walkup. Now, Walkup will be wearing the Reds jersey and returning to Kaunas where he spent the last three years. However, welcoming a former fan and locker room favorite will not stop Zalgiris from trying to continue its run against the Greek powerhouse, which it beat 10 times in the last 12 games.

## ROUND 29: Saras comes to town

Last season Zalgiris prepared a warm welcome for Euroleague Basketball Legend Sarunas Jasikevicius. The Barcelona head coach was emotional in his return to his hometown while a tribute video was playing on the big screen. Barcelona went on to win 62-73, however, what that December night last season unfortunately lacked were – the fans. One hopes that next season will allow fans in the stands, which would make for a more memorable Jasikevicius return to Kaunas as he brings mighty Barcelona to town. Facing his hometown club in front of the hometown fans would be a first for Jasikevicius as a coach.

## ROUND 32: Looking to end a long streak
It's a rivalry dating back to the old USSR, but had some extra drama in recent years as three of the last four games in Moscow have been decided by 3 points or fewer – and the two of those in overtime. But CSKA won each one of those, just like it has triumphed every single time it hosted Zalgiris in competition history. Zalgiris is 0-14 when it visits CSKA all-time in European competition. Add the intrigue of Zalgiris top scorer Marius Grigonis signing with CSKA this summer and it must be one of Zalgiris's most anticipated games this season.

Zoosman (2.00 meters, 23 years old) arrives from Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, where he averaged 2.6 points and 1.5 rebounds in 11 EuroLeague games last season, his fifth with his former squad.

He grew up with Maccabi and joined its first team before the start of the 2015-16 season. 
Zoosman helped Maccabi win the Israeli Cup title in 2016, went on loan to Maccabi Ra'anana for a year only to return in 2017. 
Zoosman has helped Maccabi win the Israeli League title in each of the last four seasons, and also lifted another Israeli Cup trophy in 2021. 

He is also a member of the Israeli national team and previously helped Israel win a gold medal at the 2018 U20 European Championships, earning tournament MVP honors, and also led his national team to a silver medal at the U20 European Championships in 2017. 
In 79 EuroLeague games with Maccabi, Zoosman averaged 3.4 points and 1.9 rebounds.

Coming off an eventful season in which LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne was one of only two teams to have both a winning streak and a losing streak of more than five games, Coach T.J. Parker will try to build on the positives and turn his squad into a contender. There will be many tough tests and exciting games along the way. Here are five of particular interest to ASVEL and its fans.

## Round 1: Plenty of debuts

Although ASVEL is embarking on its third consecutive EuroLeague campaign, the roster has some players, both young and experienced, who will make their EuroLeague debuts this season. Scouts around the world will have their eyes on teenage super-prospect Victor Wembanyama every time he takes the floor. His 32-year-old frontcourt mate Raymar Morgan will debut in Europe's premier competition after a decade as a professional, including five seasons in the 7DAYS EuroCup.

## Round 12: The pride of the French League

The best teams in the French League will take their rivalry to the continental stage when ASVEL faces AS Monaco. Since 2016, one of these teams has either won the French championship or finished first in the French League regular season. Now, for the first time since the turn of the century, two clubs from the French League will clash in the EuroLeague and the eyes of all of Europe will pay attention.

## Round 16: Visiting dear friends

In his lone campaign with ASVEL, Moustapha Fall debuted in the EuroLeague and led the team in PIR, two-point shooting, rebounds and blocks last season. Another big man, Livio Jean-Charles, made his EuroLeague debut with ASVEL a year earlier. After Jean-Charles joined Olympiacos Piraeus in 2020, Fall made the move to Piraeus this summer and he will now use his 2.18 meters to hassle his replacements and his old teammates when ASVEL travels to take on the Reds.

## Round 23: Trying to keep the momentum
ASVEL turned plenty of heads last season as it hung in the playoff race for three-quarters of the regular season before fading away. Along the way, ASVEL surprised a handful of European basketball giants. When it came to regular-season champion FC Barcelona, ASVEL won twice! Its win on the road marked ASVEL's first victory in Barcelona since 1996. Can ASVEL keep up that mastery?

## Round 26: Looking for a repeat

Last season ASVEL had a party when it hosted Panathinaikos OPAP Athens, beating the Greens 97-73, which was ASVEL's biggest margin of victory in a EuroLeague home game. The team set another pair of club records, hitting 17 of 24 three-pointers for 70.8%; both the triples made and accuracy stand as club bests, topping the marks that previously stood for at least 17 years. Since its return to the EuroLeague in 2019, ASVEL has won both home games against Panathinaikos and will look to continue its success against the Greek powerhouse.
